it's not too late

it's never too late

fancy schmancy
I bought a new comfort/around the house bra a few days ago. It was one of those Playtex bras that come in the boxes. My mother insisted that I give it a try because she had seen the commercials. I reluctantly decided to give in and try it out. (Well, the bra is respectably comfortable, though I’m not sure how long it will hold up.)

Upon removing the bra from its package I noticed that fastened to one of the hooks was a string with a plastic rectangle attached. It looked fairly durable, like something that would serve a purpose – not an annoying hangtag. Except, it had no advertisements, nor did it have any obvious purpose. It was a plain, hard plastic rectangle. I admit at this point I was bit miffed that I couldn’t figure out what to do with it; I even searched the box for instructions! For a bra!

I spent a solid 10 minutes attempting to find some, any reasonable use for this dangling rectangle.  Finally, in sheer desperation, I forcibly popped open the rectangle to see what was inside. It was a security sensor. The damned rectangle housed a security tag. That’s all. A covert security tag that was to be snipped off after purchase.

Good grief.

Why do I consistently make life harder than it has to be?

The energy, style and color of New York City shines through the wide range of shades, textures and innovative products. NYC always delivers the most on-trend products & shades hot off the runway!

A beauty-editor favorite is Liquid Lipshine ($2.49). It has pure pigments that created a 3-D gloss effect. Vitamin E provides shine and a moisturizing feel. The formula is non-sticky, super shiny & soft. Available in 10 on-trend shades from neutral nudes, to berries & fuchsias.

Review: When it comes to lip products... I admit it: I'm a total snob. I'm terribly picky about lip balm and lip gloss. What can I say? I have high standards! I'm a hard working and on-the-go girl that needs a product to stand out. So, how did NYC's Liquid Lipshine perform? Beautifully.

These lip glosses have a strong vanilla flavor/fragrance to them which I don't mind but could do without. They apply smooth and not sticky (hate that!) They have a good shine and leave a pretty sheer color behind. While they're not super long-lasting, I don't mind pulling it out for another application. Oh and big rave for the flat, oval tube! These babies fit nicely in your pocket for touching up and won't roll off your desk.

Overall, they're a total steal!

Influenster: Montagne Jeunesse Cucumber Peel Off Review
Haven't heard of Influenster, yet? Check it out! I received a special Holiday VoxBox full of samples and goodies to try and review.

Product information via Influenster: Whether you enjoy looking after your skin, being pampered, or indulging in some me-time, be it alone or with friends, you will absolutely enjoy one of these ‘Life Little Pleasures’… With a huge array to choose from, our face masques are packed with the most delicious natural ingredients and are bursting with luscious fragrances. Suitable for all different skin types, there is one to suit every mood and everybody!

Review: When it comes to skincare, this girl doesn't mess around! I love all things make-up and beauty, but it's so important to start off with a fresh, clean base. One of my favorite skincare rituals is to sit down and relax with a masque. I've tried various brands with many promises - to detox, clarify, brighten, smooth, soothe, etc. So, when I got a packet of Montagne Jeunesse in Cucumber Peel Off, I was super excited! Peel off masques are one of my favorites. (Even my husband loves them, but shhh! I didn't spill that.)

So, how'd it do? This masque promises to be purifying and gently peel away dead skin cells and yuckies in a snap. I'd say it does just that! I cannot lie and say that I don't love this masque purely for the fun of peeling it off - that's a gigantic factor. It's strangely satisfying to peel off the masque and imagine all the gross dead skin coming away with it. Afterward, though, my skin does feel soft and clean!

I would (and will) definitely be repurchasing this and other varieties in the future.

Ready to snag your own? Montagne Jeunesse beauty treats are free of parabens, vegetarian approved and never tested on animals. So treat yourself today to a masque that will hydrate, nourish and leave your skin cleansed, smooth and glowing. Available at ULTA Beauty, Walgreen’s, Claire’s, Walmart, Kroger, CVS Pharmacies and other retailers across the US.

Influenster: Broadway imPRESS Manicure Review

Review: I have to admit: when I first saw these press-on nails, I was hesitant. I mean... I'm 22-year-old. I used press-on nail kits when I was a kid! They fell off so easy that it almost wasn't worth the trouble. Despite my reservations, I knew I had committed to reviewing these products, so I had to give them a chance.

How'd it go? Surprisingly well! These are not the press-on manicure from years past. I received a set of nails in "Tweetheart", a vampy bright red. The nails already have adhesive applied to them. All you have to do is match the plastic nails to your own, peel the tab, and press them firmly on. Be sure to line them up well and straight before pressing! These babies will not come off easily. Also - be aware that when you apply them, they flatten and become somewhat wider. So be careful when matching.

The wear was incredible! Unlike press-on nails from when I was younger, these have a strong and sturdy feel. I only wore them for a weekend before popping them off, but I definitely could have kept them on without issue. My only complaint? My nails did feel a little sensitive after two days of wear. It felt as though the press-on nails were pulling up on my real nails. Perhaps because of the extreme curve of the plastic shape. Also, it would be nice if the nails came matched instead of being all mixed together.

Overall, these are super quick to apply, and a definite must for special occasions or just for fun.

Ready to snag your own? imPress Manicure retails for $5.99 for colors and $7.99 for patterns, and is available at CVS, Rite Aid, Duane Reade, KMart, Walgreens, Walmart and more. Influenster: X Out Review
Haven't heard of Influenster, yet? Check it out! I received a special Holiday VoxBox full of samples and goodies to try and review.

(image credit: Influenster /X Out Promo)

Product information via Influenster: The unique, one-step X Out Wash-In treatment is formulated to help kill the bacteria that causes breakouts, help banish existing pimples and help leave the skin feeling smooth and looking healthy. X Out works to lift away the dirt and grime that can clog pores. The Wash-In Treatment also leaves behind powerful medicine to help keep pores clean.

Review: When I first received my sample of X Out, I was torn. One on hand, I have a collection of cleansers in my beauty closet that all promise to make me more beautiful. None have have impressed me more than my favorite moisturizers. I feel like what I use afterward is more important. On the other hand... well, it sounds like a pretty neat concept. It's made by Proactiv, and it promises to leave behind some powerful acne-banishing medicine. I decided to give it a fair trial.

How'd it go? Surprisingly well! I used it as a prolonged wash/mask combo while in the shower. I love that the bottle clearly states that you have the option of using it as a regular cleanser, 10-minute mask, or a spot treatment. I was taken back by the hit of minty chill when I opened my shower curtain, though. It felt refreshing, but... I worry that it could contain some harsh ingredients (I should look into that!) It didn't seem to irritate my sensitive skin, so that's a plus. I did feel a little dry after the shower, but that could be due to the hot water as well.

Today, I have to admit... I think my mild breakouts are beginning to disappear. I know that sounds mad after only one use, but I swear I see a little improvement! Overall, this baby has earned a place in my regimen. I'm excited to see how this works out in the long run.

Ready to snag your own? Learn more and purchase at X Out is sold as a 30-day supply and comes with a bonus Shine Control product to help you fight oil all day for $19.95.

Set to stun...
I thought our toaster was broken because for the past few days it hasn't given me toast until it was black, crunchy, and dead. Not wanting to give up on my $6 toaster, I stubbornly hovered over the slots until I thought the toast was reasonably toasted, and I forced the lever up.

On a whim, I decided to slide the temperature dial* to the other side of the spectrum (*which, by the way, is completely ineffectual in that it is impossible to tell which way it is actually pointing!) Out popped a perfectly toasted toast. What!?

Oh, the toaster was fine. It's a champ, really.

My dear husband has turned the temperature dial to STUN/KILL and left it that way. Oh, the joys of married life.

This too shall pass...
I am pretty confused about the way I feel right now.

Chris was laid off. He has been cut off from unemployment for 2 weeks now. I work as an intern in the Courthouse for $7/hour. He has no health insurance. We both want(ed) to continue school. We are planning a wedding, but we can't afford much other than current bills. Wanting traditional wedding staples (e.g. rings, a dress) seems shameful, which hurts.  My "father" declined an invitation to said wedding. I am both relieved and heartbroken.

Life is scary, and it's stressful. I had thought my life was finally going well for me. I thought I was finally growing up, leaving my past for good. I thought I was free.

But for the first time in my life, I am questioning my faith. Let it be known, I am not religious. I believe that religion is man-made while spirituality and faith are individual. Blah blah blah.

Chris told me that he prayed Sunday night for the first time in years. Monday, he was offered a a temporary job for around a month.

Is that all we need to get by? Just a little faith?

I got a couple gigantic trash bags from my mother. Well, when I opened one up, it was... the biggest garbage bag I have ever seen! So naturally I knew I had to see if I could fit inside of it. I was in the middle of climbing inside the bag and pulling it over my head when Chris walked in on me. Busted!

Luckily, we're made for each other, and he had to try climbing inside of it, too.

For the record, it was big enough for him to climb into and cover up as well.

Those were some serious garbage bags.

I heart court TV shows.
I've been addicted to those court TV shows like mad lately. They're mostly full of ridiculous people and cases, but I can't stop watching them! I could never be a judge; I hate making decisions. I am, however, looking forward to going to law school and becoming a civil rights attorney. I suppose it's that I would rather tell people why I'm right and back it up than make the call of which party is right... ha!

Sunday, June 8, is the 3-year anniversary for Chris and I. In a way, I can't believe it's been so long, but in another, it feels like we've been together forever. The beginning of August will be the 1-year anniversary of us living together in our lovely little apartment. Next year, May 9, we will be getting married a month + a day before our 4-years. Time is a funny thing.

Whatever, y0.

Oh! My new domestic obsession is Shout Color Catchers! They're these little cloth-like pieces that you toss in the wash to pick up excess dye and crap that floats around in the water. They always go in white and come out gross colors, so I assume they work well. Plus, I'm a lazy bones, and I like to throw in light colors with my darks. Everything comes out well, and I haven't been let down yet. Fabulous!
